Professional background

Dr John Edwards is a General Practitioner who specialises in Addictions Medicine. He provides an outpatient service at Cambridge Clinic, a specialist addiction medicine practice he established in 1997.

Dr Edwards also provides inpatient treatment & Drug and Alcohol liaison at Abbotsford Private Hospital and The Marian Centre. Having held a special interest in mental health and addiction for more than 30 years, Dr Edwards was one of the first doctors to take up community methadone dosing in the 1990s. He has been the Chair of the Western Australia (WA) Opiate Pharmacotherapy Advisory Committee for the past 15 years. In 2003 he was made a founding fellow of the Australasian College of Physicians Chapter of Addiction Medicine.

In 2005, with his partners in Niola Hospital, he built Abbotsford Private Hospital, a 30 bed specialist centre for Drug and Alcohol problems and co-occurring mental health illnesses. He also established Blackwood River Clinic, a rural psychological rehabilitation facility / day hospital which was awarded a Mental Health Commission contract for 16 public recovery and rehabilitation places. Dr Edwards was Chair of Abbotsford and Blackwood River Clinic Board since inception until 2017.

He was previously a member of the Mental Health Commission's Mental Health Advisory Council and is currently a Member of the Commission's Drug and Alcohol Advisory Board. Dr Edwards provides training for Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry Registrar positions.
